Nom vernaculaire : Théier, pantropicale, originaire du Sud de la Chine, de la Birmanie et du haut Tonkin.

À Madagascar, il est cultivé vers 1100 m d'alt. Depuis 1850. Feuilles séchées avec ou sans fermentation. Alcaloïdes: caféine, théobromine, théophylline etc. Tonique, stimulant, antidéperditif, astringent (DARUTY, 1911).

Stimulant, astringent, diaphorétique, diurétique, digestif, antidéperditif. Névralgies, migraines, affections spasmodiques (BAILLON, 1884). Bases puriques dans toute la plante.
